ZATech Slack 10 years in

January 8, 2025

This is a follow up post to "ZATech 5 years in" and "ZATech 8 years in". Re-reading the previous posts was quite eye opening, the first being essentially "things are up and to the right, maybe we should do extra stuff that isn't just chat". Written a few months before COVID struck. Then the next post is "boo hoo things are terribly difficult, we've done nothing more than chat" written after a lot of turmoil, drama & stagnation.

Even 10 years in I mostly still feel like an accidental community manager, I started the group as a place to hang out with a few friends who were in their own work Slacks, so having somewhere shared was convenient. The fact that there's around 1'400 people using the space weekly feels kind of surreal. It's been a long journey and one that I've found exceedingly challenging. Though occasionally being told by someone that they got a great job, or were mentored through a challenging situation etc. has been wonderful.

The milestone combined with upcoming events in my personal life have made me take the decision to step away from my role as admin, and the community in general.

I'm going to be handing over to long time community member Gareth Dwyer. My hope is that he, along with the backing of his company Ritza, can breathe a bit of fresh life into the space. Dust off the cobwebs, push some positive initiatives and make ZATech somewhere people like me want to hang out, share knowledge and generally find valuable.
